KJ’S STORY
KJ first discovered Adopt-A-Block several months ago, and this is her story…
KJ is a mother of eight children, three of whom are still live at home. Her twin boys just turned 18 and graduated. Her 20-year old graduated last year and also still lives at home. Also in her care are her younger daughter’s two children: a five-month-old baby, and a six-year-old son.
Her younger daughter’s children were taken from the state of Maryland Department of Human Services after her daughter was declared mentally incompetent to care for them at this time. KJ knew she had to do something. Though she didn’t know where she would find the strength, she stepped up. “I’m doing the best that I can with God’s help,” she says. “It’s not easy.”
With her youngest sons recently turning 18, KJ admits, “I’m done. I’m supposed to be done and just enjoy my grandkids…well, God had other plans for me.” She continues to pray for her daughter, who is struggling with severe depression. KJ hopes her daughter will find the help she needs so she can one day be present for her children and her family.
According to KJ, the government shutdown has created even more challenges. However, she adds that Adopt-A-Block has a tremendous support to her and her family. “We plug in with you all. You all are here to help us. And I appreciate it,” she says. She adds that the Lord continues to give her strength, even on days when she feels like she can’t do it.
While KJ finds so much love and joy in being around babies and kids, she admits, “Like I said, I’m getting old. I don’t think I could raise them [kids] again.” Yet she’s discovered that “the instinct kicked right in.” Despite difficulties brought on by the government shutdown and the growing needs of the children, KJ remains confident that the Lord will continue to provide everything she needs.
